I have a 21" ViewSonic P810 and it's a Invar Shadow Mask. It looks great just like it did when it was made in December of 1996! Aperture Grilles supposedly have brighter colors but you pay a high premium for that. If you're rich get an Aperture Grille but, if not, you'll be more than happy with a Shadow Mask, know what I'm sayin'?:)

The biggest difference is that the 21-22" shadow masks all have curved screens, unless there is something new I don't know about. 21-22" AGs are generally flat screens.

Eizo's a great monitors. Used be called Nanao.

OTOH, to be perfectly flat the CRT must be flat on the outside AND on the inside of the front glass. I didn't think and 21-22" shadow masks were. Some 19's are though.
Actually I am looking for a perfectly flat 21" shadow mask...didn't think there were any. I currently use 21" Sony and Dell trinitrons.

Shadowmasks have their benefits too. They have much truer colors and they are sharper than aperture grills. That's why they are usually recommended for graphics design and text.

Are you very sure? afaik, most shadowmasks cannot obtain the same dot pitch or resolution, my 17" trinitron destroys my old shadowmask....

aperture grille's are more vibrant, ie graphics works.
shadow mask's tend to have better focus quality, ie text

The grill part of the AG monitor heats and warps when on. Thus the vertical lines they produce are no where near vertical. To reduce the problem the monitors have 1 or 2 horizontal wires (the horizontal shadow you see on the monitor). But even that isn't enough to eliminate the horrible wobble in the vertical lines. That is the true reason why many graphics design people like shadow mask monitors.

The Hitachi 21" shadow mask innards are quite good if you can find anyone producing a monitor with them any more. Nearly flat (you cannot see any bowing), great colors, and terrific straight lines.

I have long been an advocate of shadow mask CRT's but I think it is significant that Eizo no longer makes shadow mask monitors. I have also noticed that the price of their high end tension mask CRT monitors is about half what the shadow mask units were selling for. It looks to me like the difference in image quality did not offset the increased pricing as a market force. Cheap crap for the masses triumphs again. On the other hand, Eizo monitors seem to last forever so there is no reason not to purchase a good, used/refurb, shadow mask, Eizo monitor..

you can get the Sony trinitron monitors from a variety of manufacturer's (dell, HP, sony...)

they are apeture, but if you shop around you can usually get them fairly cheap if you shop around.

(I got a refurb 4 years back for $55) you cant beat that! usually you can get a new one for 250-350.
