I mean, are alot of them where you have to be invited by a host or are a lot of college parties where you can just show up?

College, probably just show up. If it's for a particular organization or club at the college and they're not recruiting, probably invite-only.

Someone at my school told me today that a lot of college parties were where you had to be invited in order to go.

typically you just need someone you know to let you in, just showing up can make you look like a mooch or a fool if you don't know anyone. Easiest ones to slip in are the parties that are as big as a block. House parties you better damn well know someone or else you may get beat up.

If you're talking secular college, most parties are open anything-goes drinking contests. Not a fan, personally.

Overall good manners dictates that you only go to parties where you are invited. If somebody mentions one and you're not sure whether it's open-invitation or closed-invitation, ASK! If it's open-invitation you risk nothing by asking. If it's closed-invitation you'll be glad you didn't show up where you weren't invited.

Weren't you asking this same question about a week ago about a specific party?

I don't go to parties where you don't have to know someone- around here, the only parties like that are full of bros looking to rape too-drunk freshmen.

Well this is different. I'm not asking about going into parties uninvited, I'm talking about when I get to college and I want to get on the party/social scene, within moderation and certain boundaries, of course.

showing up at a party where you don't know anyone there is kinda weird unless you're talking like a frat rush thing.

I can only think of a small handful of parties that I was specifically invited to... generally, word just spreads around between friends of the people hosting the party and if you know someone there (or one of your friends does), you tag along and show up.

Just make sure you know at least one person there. Having a foothold always helps.

No, just go and pretend you know someone, most people are too chicken or too drunk to call you out and by the time they do you should already have a beer in hand and food in your pocket. It's why I don't need to eat my own food on the weekend, and I've never been in college. GO FIGURE.

It takes me about 5 minutes per sentence to translate but it's worth it for the integrity of the thread.

at my college, the #3 party school in the nation (lol) its usually like this:
if you are going to a frat, you will usually be going with someone that knows a brother that has enough say in the frat to let you in along with the people you are with
usually at least a 1 to 1 girl to guy ratio will make this process a lot easier (and is expected... and not hard to achieve) and depending on the frat might be enough to just go in

apartment parties are different, you really need an invitation, especially since unlike a frat, most people at apartments usually knows each other, so that would be extremely awkward if you werent invited haha but it happens (random ppl inviting u to apartment, etc)

sports houses like the soccer/lacrosse house are very similar to frats btw

edit:
yea someone mentioned rushing
if its rush week(s) (beginning of semester), some places will let anyone in
or, more likely at my school, you need to get a cute little wrist band from IFC saying that you're a potential frat-pledge and then you can get in with that

pretty much this. also if your school is like most schools your first couple weekends there will be alot of big open parties, that anyone can go to, though i would still go with someone i know.

College party rule:

If you know where a party is, you're invited so go to it.

Every party I ever knew about or saw.. I went.. and I was never once treated with the 'who the hell are you?'

Although.. one time.. I had a guy ask.. 'What are you doing here?' and I said to him.. "Well, my friend and I are trying to drink your beer."

Don't be afraid.. go to parties... Most times, it's just a bunch of HUMAN BEINGS that want to hang out and drink. If you're one of them (HUMAN BEING), then go drink with them.
