Are "a" and "I" words or just letters?

Despite the letters lowercase "a" and capital "I" being in pretty much every English dictionary, my friend Rip the Jacker believes that they're not words - they're just letters.

Please vote in the poll and help bring some sense to him.

EDIT:
Him: those aren't words
Him: they're not real words
Him: those are letters

those are one letter words

unless used in other words, in which case they are letters

so they are both

Your friend is an idiot, just like I said in the other thread. You're also an idiot for starting a new thread about such an obvious thing.

Weee I'm getting flamed.

I made the thread because I knew this was the only way my friend would stop being stupid.

Of course it's obvious ... to me and everyone else that has a brain.

Edit: Pastore, I guarantee you my English is better than yours. Chillax with the unnecessary hate.

Maybe he's just pulling your leg, because I don't think anyone can be that stupid. Even a three-year-old knows that "a" and "I" are words.

Nah, he's definitely being serious.

Bump so that more people vote. I want to see statistics like 100 to 1.

What happens at 100:1? What if it turns out 100:2?

He finds a new friend?

They are words... words by definition consist of at least one spoken sound and must also carry a meaning. It just so happens that, in context, "a" and "I" accomplish this with only one letter.

From tfd.com:
word, n
1. A sound or a combination of sounds, or its representation in writing or printing, that symbolizes and communicates a meaning and may consist of a single morpheme or of a combination of morphemes

morpheme, n
A meaningful linguistic unit consisting of a word, such as man, or a word element, such as -ed in walked, that cannot be divided into smaller meaningful parts.

"A" and "I" both symbolize a meaning, and they each consist of a single morpheme. I would say that they count as words. True, they are letters too, but they are also words.

Word.

And you're an idiot for responding to him :|

And whoever responds to me is an even bigger idiot :|

If "I" is not a word, then "me" "we" "he" "she" and other posessive nouns aren't words. We just proved your friend's an idiot.

Hey which reminds me, if "a" is not a word, then "an" must not be either!

Pretty much your "friend" is a complete and total moron that really should revist elementary school if he is this confused over the language.

Seriously, he need to go back to elementary school. Is he still in 2nd grade? Might tell him to repeat 1st grade.

I had a group of guys harass me for a couple of hours because I laughed when one of them said birds were mammals. They wouldn't believe me that they weren't and thought I was being obstinate. retards, all of them.

See, this is why congress won't regulate a English only policy. No one knows what the hell it is or how to use it.

Including myself.
