Are 6 pin and 6+2 pin essentially the same?

As far as I can tell they are. I bought an Antec EA 650W PSU and a Radeon 5850 without considering their compatibility. So, now I'm wondering if they will work together, AMD says no. The PSU has a 6 pin and a 6+2 pin connector and GPU needs 2x 6 pin. Is that allowed?

what? you just plug in the two 6-pin connectors if thats what the card needs. the 2 pin part of the 6+2 connector has no effect on anything if not being used.

my psu has 4 6+2 Pin PCI-e connectors, of which 2 are plugged into my 4890 which takes 2 6 pin connectors, it will work fine for you.

I was just confused because AMD/ATI didn't list it as compatible, thanks.

Yeah, its just a way for PSU makers to give you the option of having either a 6 or 8 pin PCIe connector on the same leg. Thats why the 2pins are seperate. I know you probably already knew this and wanted to make sure. Its cool.

Better to ask a dumb question than to try to fix a dumb mistake.
