I've read from some places that 400w can be a bit louder than traditional 300w ps's. Is the sound difference noticeable in a completely silent room (aside from the PC itself)?. Or is the sound difference only audiable if you put your ear next to the unit.

All depends on the fans. If you want a quiet but powerful P/S grab an Enermax 465.

Viper GTS <-- Soon to replace his Enermax 451 with the whisper 465 version

I've got the Enermax Whisper 465 (431W) in my main rig and it is very quiet, and very powerful. definitely a "premium" piece and worth the $85 it cost in my opinion.

Yeah, the PS unit itself doesn't really make any noise, it just all depends on the fan...

400w PS fans may be louder due to the manufacturer wanting a nice and cool power supply, or just to push more air and be more efficient.

All depends on the fan (as Viper GTS stated before me)

I recently swapped out a 300W Antec supply (quiet) to a 400W Antec (still quiet).

Any of the whisper series of Enermax PS are excellent and very very quiet. I personally have a 465P-VE and it's quiter than my case fans. Unless, however you really believe a computer should be *absoloutley* silent most all power supplies make some noise above the good old 230-250watt ;)
