I have a Pentium 2 laptop that incorportates PCMCIA type II slots, and was wondering if I could use cardbus components (namely a 10/100 nic) in it. I hear cardbus works on most PCMCIA slots, but I'm not quite sure... anyone know?

There are 2 PC Card standards, the older 16-bit PCMCIA card standard using 5 volts, which is effectively an ISA based card (it uses the ISA bus as well), and then there is the newer CardBus standard, which is a 32-bit interface operating at 3.3 volts (a PCI device using the PCI bus as well).

Type I, Type II and Type III refer only to the size (the height) of the PC Cards. You can find Type I, Type II and Type III cards for both PCMCIA and CardBus. A Type III card is double the height of a Type II card.

32-bit CardBus cards have metal notches on the end to prevent insertion into 16-bit PCMCIA slots. PCMCIA cards can be inserted into CardBus slots.

CardBus slots are found on late mobile Pentium MMXs....all mobile Pentium II systems should be using CardBus slots.
