Are 2 memory sticks better than 1 on Athlon 64's ?

I have a unusual problem of my current system being unstable with two memory sticks. Either one works great, but the two together bring down my system. I have brought down the speeds to the lowest possible levels, but it does not help.

Im now building a new system not and am wondering if you pro's could tell me how much of a difference does two dimms of 512mb have over a single stick of 1GB ? With all these dual channell stuff on the Athlon 64's, Im wondering how much performance I will lose if I go for a single stick of 1GB.

And by the way, I will be going for :

Atlon 64 3000+ (Or 2800+)
Asus K8N-E Deluxe nforce3 based MB
Xtasy ATI 9600 256MB card
1GB local DDR (Make is never guaranteed here)
SB Live 24bit card
350w psu

Please advise as I need to buy soon !

If you're getting a 754 A64, it's not going to make a difference afaik, but for 939, 2 sticks is preferred to get dual channel.

youd have better luck in the general hardware or cpu/processors forum. i know with athlon xps the difference with dual channel was insignifigant, but i think it may be an advantage with the 64s. but, i really dont know/cant remember, so check there for more knowlegable responses.
