Arctic silver???

I just bought this heatsink and fan to go with my athlon xp 2000+, the heatsink comes with a small packet of "silicon compound". Should I use the silicon compound or spend 8 bucks and get some arctic silver? I don't plan on overclocking but i still don't want my processor to get too hot. . .

Depends how "hardcore" you are, I guess. Since you appear to be fine using the stock hsf, you might as well use the grease it came with as well. My advice to you would be to drop for the AS3, and also to drop for a good HSF to boot. It will be well worth it, and may increase the life of your cpu. You can never be too careful when dealing with them Athlons.

Agreed. Stock will work, but those AMD chips run hot. Aim higher for both, it'll be worth the investment.

Just make sure you get real Arctic Silver, they have these messages posted all over their site about the fake AS

Joe, stick with the thermal grease that came with your HSF, it will do just fine.

Just dont overclock. Worth getting some AS3 just incase the ambient temperature shoots up due to hot weather = cpu rise.

Arctic Silver is good, but is not a "do or die" grease job when overclocking. I have overclocked several Athlons using the retail/aftermarket HSF's w/ Chromerics thermal pad and not run into any major heat issues. Since temps in Texas reach 100F+ this time of the year, I factor in the hot weather. The fact remains most of us become "loyal and blind" when it comes to hardware and equipment, myself included. Please realize that not everyone here thinks geek like the rest of us.
