More like a generalzed question but where should one apply the thermal compound? The heatsink or the processor? Does it matter? What can be used to spread it around without damaging the processor. Also about how much should I use. Thanks.

apply it to the cpu only

Use a glob about as big as half a grain of dry rice, and spread it with a razor blade or something similar.
