Arctic Silver on heatsink or cpu?

kritical

Senior member
im installing an athlon xp. Should I put the ac on the heatsink or the cpu core? ive heard diffrent responses...don;t really know which to do.

both. see here

edit: darnnit, nelson beat me to it, but the info is incorrect. if you read the instructions, it says to put it on both.

<< Due to the unique shape and sizes of the silver particles in Arctic Silver II, it will take a minimum of 48 hours to achieve maximum particle to particle thermal conduction and for the heatsink to CPU interface to reach maximum conductivity. (This period will be longer in a system without a fan on the heatsink.) On systems measuring actual internal core temperatures via the CPU's internal diode, the measured temperature will drop as much as 2C to 4C over this "break-in" period >>

48hrs, they also mentioned this in recent interview

what is the consensus around here?

didn't really notice a difference from time of application to after breakin period.

Notice a drop of 1C.

I put a very thin layer on both heatsink and cpu... I usually apply it to the heatsink first, then because I can't stand to waste the leftovers, I put the rest on the cpu core.

<< Geez...the person applying the Arctic Silver is a girl with long fake nails...WTF >>

well......sex sells! 😉

I wasn't really counting the stuff you put on the heat sink and then wipe back off, but it is true that you put it on both. You just don't leave a layer on both.
