The instruction website says something about 0.005 inches or something.....

how thick (in a size that makes it able to measure) should it actually be?

About as thick as a piece of paper. Doesn't have to be thick at all. Make sure you impregnate your Heatsink the way they show on the site, and then just make sure you cover the top of the entire core with it. It shouldn't be thick because you don't want it smooshing all over the chip. I've already gotten 3 applications out of my little tube, and there's still some left.

The paper analogy is good, basically as thin as you can get it and still be even.

Thin enough that you can JUST BARELY make out the color of the core, but obviously without any rough spots or holes.

why does it matter if it gets all over the chip?? that's how i do it most of the time, just put a whole bunch on there and sorta smooth it our with a razor, then let the hsf squeeze the rest out......
