Just bought a tube of AS5 and applied it to my P4 2.4 CPU. The temp doesn't seem to have dropped, in fact it's a degree or 2 higher than before when I was using the cheap stuff. Does AS5 need to settle for a while before it takes effect?

Yes, it can take time. That usually means you used more than necessary. The excess will eventually be displaced by pressure from the heatsink and warming/cooling cycles from turning the computer on and off.

Arctic Silver has different instructions for applying AS5 to the heat spreader of a P4 vs a FCPGA processor.

What did the AS5 replace? Was it a thermal pad installed on the heatsink from the factory? If so, did you clean it off thoroughly?

Fingerprints on the critical surfaces will have a negative impact on the performance the thermal compound.

Is this comparison using the same heatsink?

yeah after rubbing the gell to the core of the cpu, wait for a little aprox 2-5 minutes then i guess you can put it back in your mobo

my cousin "kaz8teen" did this before and his is cooler, if you want you can PM him with some advice

quick question, do I need to let the Arctic Silver 5 set in for a certain amount of time before I turn on a newly built computer? I just got the parts in today, and after applying the arctic silver, can I immediately turn on the machine to play with it? Or should I wait a certain amount of time to allow it to "set"? Please let me know. Thanks!

Regards,
Brian

i would let it set for a minute so that the gell thingy can maybe be asborb on the core of the cpu and then u can just attach it to ur heatsink and mobo and just be done i guess
