Arctic Silver 5 questions

I am planning on using arctic silver, but I got a few questions.
I'll be using it on amd 64 venice 3200 core, is 3.5 gram tube enough? and how many times can I use it? (how many applicatoins)
I also see something called arctic silver ceramique, is that better than AS5? I'll be overclocking from 2ghz to ~2.6-3.0ghz

and a final question, what's the cheapest place to buy it? ZZF is like 11 bucks, newegg is the same if you add shipping. Any place I can get it cheaper?

jab-tech.com or svc.com SVC has several goops in their clearance bin from 25 cents up. The CoolerMaster goop on clearance is the excellent Shin Etsu stuff (AMD recommended - AS Silver isn't) but it is not as easy to use.

All the top types (shin etsu, AS5, ceramique, etc.) cool around the same. You may shave 1 C max by using a different brand, but it really isn't that big of a deal. I personally use AS5, because my local store carries it for $5 a tube!
 
My 3.5g AS5 tube has lasted me like 10 recoatings, so it should last a while...

BTW the store is some local mom and pop place... Don't know if it really has a name, the sign just says PC parts and supplies. Most of the hardware is way overpriced ($120 for 1GB corsair value), but occasionally you can find good deals.
 
Local stores: You occasionally find good deals on cheaper products because shipping online is .... well ... yeah. Expensive (compared to the price of the product)
 
Most people here don't leave their stuff alone long enough to discover that. 😉 Just watch your CPU temp. If it starts an upward trend over a period of a few days then it's time to renew the goop. Or you could just renew the goop annually and not have to worry about watching the temp...
. Unfortunately AS5 will have settled out by the next time you will need to use it - so you will have to stir it back up w/o getting any foreign particles or air bubbles in it. That's why I pointed out the CoolerMaster/Shin Etsu stuff (PTK-001). It's a bit harder to use than AS5 but it doesn't settle out between uses. And they work equally well.

i dont even see the point in getting AS5. the stuff that came with my xp-90 has given me better temps that i could have hoped for.
 
Hi all,

I still have an unused tube of AS2 and a tube of Ceramique. Does it make a difference in terms of properties breaking down or should I go out and get the AS5???

Any compound that comes with a HSF by a name brand manufacturer is as good as any other. AS is greatly over-rated, imo.

with a 3.5gram tube you can probably use it on 900 billion CPUs or so 🙂

Just take a tiny, tiny grain (half of a rice grain) and put it on the middle of the CPU

It has dried out on me a few times. This was several years ago (I don't know if their newer stuff is any better about this).

I had to reapply it because of temp increases.

That is why I like Ceramique better. It cools just about the same, but lasts a lot longer in my experiences with it.
