What do you guys do with the pad at the bottom of the plate? My initial thinking would be to remove it and apply Arctic Silver 5. But the pad seems to be glued on pretty good and I have been hearing that they are OK now as compared to AS5.

I have both the 64 Freezer Pro and the Freezer 7 Pro.

Thanks,

;)

I'm currently using the Freezer64 Pro and the pad is actually Artic Cooling's own MX-1 paste, which performs just as well as AS5 in my opinion. The pad is a little thick, but my temps were perfectly fine.

I've removed and reapplied MX-1 with the Freezer64 several times, and didn't notice any difference in temps between the original pad and thinner layers of MX-1.

I just noticed this gadget is designed in Switzerland, patented in Germany and the US. Just hope it will perform better than my Zalman 7000.

By the way, would isopropyl alcohol remove this paste (pad)?

;)

I had the Freezer Pro 7 on the C2D for a couple of weeks. I used a razer blade to go under the paste layer and took everything off with one pass. Then I used alcohol wipe to clean up the residuals. I applied a very very thin layer of AS5 on the surface of the heatsink just like I do w/ every other heatsink to fill in the micro gaps. I then applie another layer of AS on the IHS that's a bit thicker than the one on the heatsink. Works great every time. I'm using Thermalright Ultra-120 now.

@Baked,

Thanks.

I will build a Conroe (core2duo) system as soon as the MB stability and maturity materialize.

During the meantime I m playing with the HSF setup.

MX-1 is decent when its preapplied, but its a pain to work with from a tube. It's so thick that it deosn't spread very well. This may or may not affect the performance but it's something to consider. I'm thinking the thickness may cause it to not spread as evenly as Arctic Silver once you put the heatsink on, but I haven't conducted any tests or anything.

MX-1 does not need to be spread. You put a dot in the middle, push the heatsink base onto it, spin the heatsink around +-45 degrees and then clip it on. Got me better temps than on AS5.

You will see no difference using AS5 over the pad/paste that comes with the Arctic Cooling heatsink!!
AS5 is not as good as some would lead you to believe!!
