I have a C2D 8400 and want to upgrade from the factory HSF. Looking for a cooler that is overall quieter and provides better cooling performance than the stock cooler. Is the ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro the best choice for under $40 shipped?

Thanks :)

it's the best for under $25 probably. but the xigmatek s1283 at $37 is one of the best heatsinks. there's also the 92mm version that's a little cheaper and should beat AC Freezer.

You shouldn't be paying over $25 for the F7P. Under 40, you can sometimes get the Scythe Ninja which is on another echelon but can cool things passively.

i've seen the ACF7P for $18, its decent at best.. but it'll leave your wanting for more so spend the extra $20 and get the best...

I decided to spend an ultra $10 over what I found the ACF7P and got the XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 for $37 shipped.

I don't know. I loved my ACF7Pro and I got it for $16 shipped from newegg. I put it vs. my brother's true on our E6550's and clock for clock, I hung right with him for max OC speeds. Granted, my temps were a shade higher but he couldn't outpace me. It also took my E3110 Xeon over 4GHz. That said, it definately fell behind when I put it on my Q6600, it just couldn't dissipate the heat well enough.

i'm know its a very good cooler for the price, but it will likely leave you wanting in the cooling/OC dept. i know i'd hate it to be losing out on potential cooling/OC headroom for an extra $10 or $20

That was my point, I don't see any gains with a true over the ACF7Pro in overall OC speeds. My clocks were just as high as my brothers on the same exact E6550 chip. Unless you are looking for a Q6600 solution, then MAYBE but I replaced my ACF7Pro on my Q6600 with water cooling and gained MAYBE 100MHz oc more total over my ACF7Pro.

I just put my order in for new mobo, RAM etc with Q6600 and ACF7Pro. I will however have the ACF inside a wind tunnel and are looking for 2-5c lower than if just inside a case sharing ambient air etc.
Will keep you informed of temps.

I got the XIGMATEK HDT-S1283. Pain to install with the push pins, and the fan was an even bigger pain. Anyways, it cools my processor better than the stock cooler, and the fan doesnt even spin (0rpm)...

Craziness.

I wouldn't bother with the push pins on ANY cooler, just get the thermalright bolt thru kit from nearly any decent online vendor.
