Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev. 2

Received my Accelero from Case-Mod.com this morning in the mail, I used 2-3 Day USPS Priority. Other than the short wait due to it being OOS, which can happen at any e-store, I'm happy with Case-Mod.com.

Well I ordered the Accelero S1 Rev 2 and also the Turbo module. I got it in the mail and proceeded to install the cooler and fan onto my new 8800GT. The cooler went fine and the ram heatsink modules would not stick right. I read somewhere that they were heat activated so I figured no biggie, they will stick when I fire it up.

Now the heartbreak came...man o man did it come.............. I pushed and I mean I pushed really really gently on the Turbo fan. See they have clips that go through the heatsink and at the tip are shaped like an "L" so they grab the underside of the heatsink and hold on. The first fan went fine.....when I did the second fan, it made a small "click" or "pop" sound. I thought it was the "L" clip sliding past and grabbing the heatsink, but what it was was the oil seal that was covered by a flimsy piece of tape popped and the oil for the bearings in the fan leaked out and the fan didn't spin freely like a normal stepped fan does, it was hard to spin...I was screwed!!!!:shocked:
So I sat there looking at my now passive cooler and was getting madder by the second, until a brainstorm hit me.
I pulled out my box of spare nuts/washers/screws from about 40 previous pc builds and came up with the following...................

Notice I pulled out the plastic cap that covers the mounting bracket. It does nothing and it covers up some of the heat pipes and main copper heatsink that covers the GPU. This allows for more airflow over the heatsink and heatpipes.
The washers are plastic and since the shape of the cooler is a little curved, I could not tighten it too much, but it's plenty tight.
The result on Rivatuner is 37 degrees C on idle and 50 degrees on full load. Was not hard to do even!
Yeah a little weird, and maybe just maybe a 120mm fan would be better, but that is an 80mm fan at 17 Db so it's darn quiet. And the weight is minimal.
Just be warned that those Turbo coolers are fragile and I mean with a capital F.
Give it a try if you want!

I installed mine over the weekend and I was able to successfully get the ramsinks to stick very well. I cleaned them off with some isopropyl alcohol I had in the cabinet, followed by a pencil eraser as described in the AC instructions. About 10-15 seconds worth of pressure and I was able to lift the entire card up by each ramsink. What did you do about the voltage regulators on your 8800GT? I thought about breaking out the Dremel and cutting the supplied sink down to fit but just left it out. It didn't look like it would cover all of them even if I was able to make it fit.

I really like the solution you came up with to attach your fan. I might have to give that a try. I strapped on a spare 120mm Cooler Master case fan I had in my spares box with zip ties. I've seen a good 20C drop in temps both at idle and load, I haven't seen more than 47-48C under load. This is one hell of a cooler!

I like my accelero s1 rev2's a lot. They work great and are cheap compared to other options. I was a little concerned about the ramsinks since some review sites said they dont stick well but I followed the instructions and they stick fine...like someone else mentioned i could pick up the whole card with any one ramsink. I was also concerned they woudnt not work well since I used the thermal tape they supplied and they arent very large compared to the stock cooler cooling the ram but honestly when testing I was able to overclock my ram a good amount higher with these small ramsinks than the stock cooler....also my gpu clocks higher and my temps went from around idle 40-45c load 82-85c to around idle 32c load 45-50c
 
how well do these work on the 8800gts (g92)
I notice the accelero website said this reguarding the gts,

* GeForce 8800GTS(G92): In order to guarantee sufficient cooling performance, a Turbo Module may be added.

Would I be better off keeping my stock cooling then? I don't want the turbo modules... they kinda defeat the purpose of passive cooling 😛

 
from what I have read when I was researching these was that they "should" be able to passively cool most all cards they claim aside from perhaps the x1950xtx which runs a little hotter. I have the turbo modules and they are super quiet in my opinion.....cant hear them at all above any other fan in your case even if you only have a couple low noise fans I would think. Also the cooling performance is quite a bit better with the turbo or any other fan you might add.
 
Nothing but 120mm fans for me, so I like this cooler. Might have to get it if I ever upgrade my video card...

Well if you have an environment prone to high ambient temps it might not be good. However these heatsinks will generally perform just as good if not better than a stock sing slot cooling solution, and should keep temps down below safe thresholds claimed by nVidia. It most likley won't perform as well as the reference stock cooling on a GTS as that's a two slot cooler with a fan...

Also, a case with decent airflow can help out a ton.

Keep in mind you don't have to use the turbo modules, you can always strap on your own ultra quiet fan.
 
It's not really a matter of wanting or not wanting the turbo modules, I just might not be able to fit them. If you follow my thread HERE You'll see that I'm setting up a watercooled solution. I plan on buying a thermalright HR-05 sli/IFX for my southbridge, so two 8800gts (g92) in SLI with an HR-05, I'm not too sure that the turbo modules will even fit on at least the first 8800.

If anyone knows different, please let me know.
 
Arctic Cooling probably can't crank these out fast enough to keep up with demand. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a price increase on these things.

Unfortunately I was right. Newegg jacked the price up $6 since my last post.
