Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 problem

I just bought an Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 (rev 2) to put on my 8800GT.

My temps with the stock cooler were 56 idle, 85 load (centigrade).

After reading many reviews concerning the Accelero, they all mentioned drops in temperatures of about 20-30 degrees (passive cooling, no fan). So I was expecting nothing less.

My temps with the Accelero are now 49 idle, 66 load (with a fan).

Needless to say, I was disappointed with these results. When I removed the fan on the Accelero, my temps were only a few degrees lower than my stock VGA cooler. This didn?t make sense.

I?ve always replaced the stock HS on my cards, so I?m not new to this, and I know I installed it correctly. I then decided to have a closer look at the base of the Accelero. Anybody with this cooler knows that the base has very obvious machine marks, so using a thermal paste is vital. However, a quick test with a ruler showed me the base is concave. The centre of the GPU core doesn?t make contact with the base of the heatsink.

My question is, would this be cause enough to explain my lackluster temps so far? I can?t lap the Accelero due to how it is constructed. My only real option I guess is to try and put enough thermal paste to fill the concave gap.

Any suggestions?

What kind of airflow is it getting? What thermal goop did you throw on there or did you keep the Arctic Cooling MX-2 that was already applied (best choice)? To be honest, 49C and 66C load is pretty good and you shouldn't have anything to worry about given that you're not overclocking.
