I disagree. for a good portion of the US they really need to pay attention to winter storms.
Where i live we pay attention to it. We make sure we have a full tank of propane, keep 5-20 gallons of fuel and keep the kitchen stocked. Oh and a few cords of wood.
It's not uncommon to lose power for 2-3 days. We have a wood burning stove that keeps us warm during that.
If you're out in the country and rely on propane and wood burning stoves, fine. I grew up like that. However, there still wasn't a need to freak out about things.
I remember the Halloween blizzard of '91 among others. Once my parent's entire garage was drifted over. We lost power but always had wood and this was when we didn't have the intarwebs and everything else to freak us out. You just turned to the news in the evening, they gave you the weather, and you had a backup radio to get AM. You just deal with it.
My dad grew up in North/West MN and he wasn't a big bitch about it. Like other areas of rural US, they have gates on the freeway to prevent people from going on them during a major storm. You have good gloves/hat/boots, get a shovel for the car, a flashlight, a blanket, and that's it.
None of this other shit of OMG ARMAGEDDON!!!!!
I got my house ready, drained my external water lines, brought in hoses, put fuel stabilizer in the mower, and ran the snow blower for 5mins. Otherwise, BFD. We're going to get somewhere between 10-16" of snow. I'll go to work tomorrow, come home, deal with the snow. I drive a FWD car to/from work, up hills, through the country.
