I don't quite get all of the mass hysteria over the weather. Big fucking deal. Get up, shovel/blow, go to work, come home and spend time with your family. There's no need to freak out about it.

You've got to factor in that we've got at least one generation and perhaps two that think man is responsible for any form of weather we experience.

Oh, and LOL at outrage over this headline.

Is this a term used by meteorologists or just a term made up by some editor?

I think the OP should find out before getting outraged.

Also, the term 'bomb' or 'bombing' is often used outside of the context of war etc. Ever heard of email bombs etc?

I disagree. for a good portion of the US they really need to pay attention to winter storms.

Where i live we pay attention to it. We make sure we have a full tank of propane, keep 5-20 gallons of fuel and keep the kitchen stocked. Oh and a few cords of wood.

It's not uncommon to lose power for 2-3 days. We have a wood burning stove that keeps us warm during that.

Same here.

I live in the mountains and when roads ice up it's best for most people to just stay home; that means being prepared with food etc as you mentioned.

pay attention, take sensible precautions. Far northern michigan gets some nasty winter weather. But this hype over weather in general is getting ridiculous.

If you're out in the country and rely on propane and wood burning stoves, fine. I grew up like that. However, there still wasn't a need to freak out about things.

I remember the Halloween blizzard of '91 among others. Once my parent's entire garage was drifted over. We lost power but always had wood and this was when we didn't have the intarwebs and everything else to freak us out. You just turned to the news in the evening, they gave you the weather, and you had a backup radio to get AM. You just deal with it.

My dad grew up in North/West MN and he wasn't a big bitch about it. Like other areas of rural US, they have gates on the freeway to prevent people from going on them during a major storm. You have good gloves/hat/boots, get a shovel for the car, a flashlight, a blanket, and that's it.

None of this other shit of OMG ARMAGEDDON!!!!!

I got my house ready, drained my external water lines, brought in hoses, put fuel stabilizer in the mower, and ran the snow blower for 5mins. Otherwise, BFD. We're going to get somewhere between 10-16" of snow. I'll go to work tomorrow, come home, deal with the snow. I drive a FWD car to/from work, up hills, through the country.

Certainly those of you who criticize the hype have a point. Everything is now 'entertainment' and thus overhyped for ratings.

OTOH, there is a positive benefit to hyping weather problems. They are real and, as we have often seen, too many ignoring warnings (particularly hurricanes). Maybe the hype will help somewhat.

In any case, too many problems for me to get agitated about the use of the term 'bomb' in a weather headline. I saw it earlier and it just left me confused.

It's an actual term in meteorology; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bomb_(meteorology)

640px-Extratropical_Cyclone_East_of_Japan_2013-01-15.jpg

The January 2013 Northwest Pacific bomb cyclone east of Japan, which met the conditions of a bomb cyclone

On top of it all,.. it's even stated as so in the CNN video footage; the news caster said something to the extent of yes, it's an actual weather term,..

Sorry - what is the big deal here?

"Bomb to hit the US" is an attention-grabber.

So it's getting colder. Wake me up when it's over.

The east is turning into a frozen tundra, and the west is turning into a desert. California is experience record heat and the worst drought in recorded history. If things don't improve soon, California could become a desert devoid of trees and such.

When nature finally does drop a bomb on us... we'll know.

Depending on the size of that bomb the surviving humans may even have time to contemplate the ultimate futility of putting all of one's civilization eggs in one planetary basket.

They just crashed a plane that was supposed to take people to the edge of the atmosphere. We can't leave earth. Its not a matter of choice.

Well, looks like I gotta go run down the main street here flailing my arms in the air and screaming like a little girl again.

Don't be such a pessimist...I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.

Now back to the daily freakout, already in progress...

I love the quote, but we lack motivation to do it again. And lets be honest, a similar goal is not big enough. We need to aim higher. We need to go to mars, permanently, in the same way we have a permanent human presence in orbit.
I am an extreme optimist, but not for the near future. I happen to think we are headed toward some nasty shit, but long term I feel things will be very good. Unspeakably good actually.
