Archiving Company Emails?

Is it legal to keep a copy of every email coming in and out of a mail server to have as a record should it ever need to be examined?

I don't delete mail until I run out of space in my mailbox, and I'm sure my boss keeps copies of everything I send and receive. I never use my work e-mail for personal stuff.

I keep a copy of almost all of my work emails. My local archive from notes takes up almost 2 gigs of space. The lotus notes guy does not like me too much

I'm looking for more along the lines of: does your Lotus Notes admin keep copies of your emails too?

Yep, everything that goes in or out is saved. One of the IT folks told us a story about this pair of people at a place he worked at who used their work email like IM and had this whole relationship via their work email for years, including huge fights, and then one cheated the company or something and they both got nailed.

You changed your question. Yes, it's legal. On all our work computers you have to click okay to a popup that says everything on the computer and done on the computer is property of [company] and that you agree to abide by their rules. Clicking okay is a legal agreement. It's perfectly legal for them to track and keep all corrospondence.

Not only is it legal, it's required by law in some instances. Google for Sarbanes Oxley Act and HIPAA regulations.

Some compliance info

If it's being wrote on and transmitted via company equipment, then it's company property and privy to reveiw.

Bah, lotus has so many holes in it. Just delete them. If you know how to do basic vb, you can tear lotus a new one. Hell, you don't need admin rights to do a cascade delete. It is so stupid.
