4-2-2004 UN: Ethnic Cleansing Sweeps Sudan's Darfur Region

Arab militias are conducting an organized campaign of ethnic cleansing to drive out black Africans from Sudan's Darfur region

"Scorched-earth tactics are being employed throughout Darfur, including the deliberate destruction of schools, wells, seed and food supplies, making whole towns and villages uninhabitable," he said, describing an "organized campaign" that has driven hundreds of thousands from their homes and triggered "one of the world's worst humanitarian crises."

You're right, I meant that Ethnic group Saddam killed off in the Northern part of Iraq, isn't that ultimately the reason Bush said we went to War there, to free those people and not the WMD afterall?

Even though they are doing the exact same thing Milosevic did in the Balkans by cleansing ethnic albanians, those people were white so we came flying to their rescue. However these people are black, so the world doesn't care. On top of that, Americans are reprehensive to having another Black Hawk Down scenario in which our troops are caught, killed, dragged thru the streets naked. Especially while the same is already happening in IRAQ.

also, DOWN WITH MUGABE!!

Yes Dave, there is oil there. Do you want proof or can you do something about your ignorance on this subject by yourself?

I see you've been taking lessons from Kerry. That was a very nice flip-flop.

if we say yes, you'll bitch about how we dont have enough money, man power, and other such recources to conduct yet another piece of a war, and how we haven't even finished what we started in other countries.
if we say no, you'll moan about how you were right about iraq and whatever else nonsense you want to throw out.

you just dont like Bush. you can quit searching for reasons to justify your hatred and just accept the fact that you dont like him. we already know that no matter what Bush or those involved in the Bush administration do, you'll always bitch, moan, and whine about it and further your little tirades about how he's the worst president ever.

Time and time again you say we go to war for oil, but you've yet to come up with conclusive proof. The only proof we have is that your mind fabricates lies on a 24 hour basis and then reports them as things that you swear are true.

If you're practing for 2008, then the only outcome for this election means that Bush will be re-elected. :D After all, a seasoned liberal wouldn't dare run against Kerry if he won. hahahaha Thanks for admitting that you know Bush will win and that you're desperate attempts to stop it will fail. :D

People don't care because they're black, you dumbass, they don't care because there's nothing of any strategic or political interest in that area. Quit being a racist.

Sand Thugs? I've got a feeling you'd like to replace Thugs with another word that starts with a N. I'm not really PC, but WTF does is matter if they live in the desert? You live in GEORGIA.

there's a lot of posters in this thread that want to use this tragedy to advance their squabbles with other posters in this thread - how about some discussion of WHETHER the US should be exercising leadership in the UN to attempt to head off this humanitarian disaster (or, failing this, what other options exist?)

Sudan has been in low grade conflict since at least the 1980s, so this escalation should not be a surprise to anyone that reads the newspaper. What is a shame is that this happened on the edge of an agreement to end the conflict.

It would be comforting if it appeared _something_ were being discussed toward this end, beyond U.S. Condemning The Events In the Strongest Possible Terms and beyond U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs holding a news conference to urge the world to pressure Sudan.

I still say Congo is worse than Iraq or Sudan. If we should have intervened in anything, however, it would have been back in Rwanda. The genocide there was truly sickening. But nah, they were black so we went to Serbia instead.

The Congo and Rawanda also doesn't border our Allies like Turkey and Greece. If we would have not done anything in Serbia and Bosnia both those countries could have been drawn into conflict with each other due to the religious nature of the Serbian/Bosnian conflict and the already prickly tensions between our two Nato Allies. If left alone it could have turned into a real bad situation which could have drawn in Russia and the other Eastern European Countries not to mention those two Southern European Allies I mentioned.

I agree that was more than likely the reasoning behind our intercession, but the government always told the public it was about humanitarian needs. That's why people scream foul when we ignore African countries. From a PR standpoint it looks bad. Hell, Bosnia started WWI, so I guess we were making sure history wasn't going to repeat itself.
