I believe that once the Army realized this issue they changed the M1 to NOT make the clank sound when completely empty of rounds.
As you stated, the Germans and Japanese would wait to hear the clink and then charge, knowing we were out of ammo.
Also, the M1 isnt an easy gun to load, and if you get your finger near the chamber whent it comes back, you can lose a thumb!

BTW did you ever read that story about that guy that bought a old M1 from a surplus outfit and when he took it apart to clean it it turned out to be the SAME EXACT rifle he carried in Korea! :shocked:
