Aquarium - going for a more natural look

Ok, so I have a really nice 55 gallon aquarium setup. I purchased it at PetsMart(way over paid on it) and got 100lbs of gravel, and well, 3-4 mid size decorations. I simply want to go with a more natural look. I have 10 cichlids, and a pecostamus( if thats spelled right) so I need to go with something they like. What do you suggest I do. I live in Texas, so I am sure I can find some rock, but what kind, and where can I find them? Would driftwood out of a river be good in this tank as well? I am trying to go the CHEAPEST way out - virtually free if I can just find the stuff. Please help me out!

The best place to get rock is at a gardening or landscaping store (usually 5-10 cents a pound).

I wouldn't recommend driftwood out of a river for a few reasons. It could potentially be carrying diseases, rotting matter, and small animals and plants that could be detrimental to the tank. Of course, boiling and/or bleaching the driftwood could help with this, but it's still a risk. More importantly, who knows what chemicals are in the river, and whether the driftwood has absorbed them. You might put the driftwood in the tank, and 6 months from now it starts to slowly poison the water.

Also, what kinds of cichlids do you have? Depending on the types, 10 might be a little much for a 55 gallon tank.

Anyone know what kinda rocks I should look for? Also, I was down at the river yesterday and found a bunch of what I call "skipping rocks". If I was to boil them, and clean them, would they be ok to put in the tank?

I know that, he may not.

Even 10 African cichlids in a 55 is asking for trouble. If they are males, once they mature and setup territories the war will begin. And forget about ever adding another fish. My last freshwater tank (I have saltwater reefs now) was a 100 with malawi africans in it. I had 6 males, and it was a warzone.

These better be really small cichlids, or you're going to have a lot of dead fish very soon...

With a 100lbs of gravel, how deep is that exactly? You only need just enough to cover the bottom...
