I knew that some apps for the iPad would not work on the iPhone or iPod touch, but it never occurred to me that the opposite was true too. I assumed and hoped that some sort of scaling would be done. I just got my first iPad (mini 2, refurbished) and noticed this. For example, there are two separate versions of the Ticket to Ride game. There is only one version of Carcassonne.

Don't think I've ever encountered an iPhone app that work with my iPad. You can either have them display at their native resolution, or upscaled double sized. All be it still with black bars. Most of the popular apps do already have iPad versions. Though Instagram doesn't for some reason.

All iPhone apps will work on the iPad. Apps that have two separate versions are just trying to get you to pay twice for the same thing.

iPhone-only apps that work on the iPad also suck on the iPad, cuz they're just blown up iPhone apps and look stupid. It's much better to get a universal app, or a dedicated iPad app.
