same with mine...
i pulled out the mobo to put on a ninja, and took a look at the hsf on the chipset. it's a piece of crap... the tim had come unstuck (it was a pad) and was making virtually no contact... cleaned it all off and put on some ceramique and stuck it back together... still damn hot 50c idle... pushing 70c cranked up...
pulled the thing back apart and took off the foam ring on the hsf, to see if maybe it was keeping the hsf away from the chip... no real difference...
what sux too is that the x800xl outputs its hot air right on top of the chipset cooler, so it can suck it right in!!!... i put a little shroud on the end of the board to move the hot air past the chipset hsf, and at it only goes up to about 65c now...
the x800xl goes right over the top of the chipset, so i wonder what other cooling is available...
i don't remember the thing being that hot... do u run 4 sticks of memory? that's the last change i made (4x512)... does the thing have to work extra hard with 4 slots in use? i just haven't gotten around to yanking the memory to see if it makes any difference...
pc is stable at 278x9, so it doesn't seem to be a problem... case cools pretty good, i have a stock a64 hsf 70mm fan blowing thru a ninja with the chip at 1.6v and max temp is 116f... and in the default bios settings the fan control says > 55c chipset fan on full... so i get a feeling they expect it to run warm...
