Appropriate amount for a donation in memorial of someone?

One of my friend's dad died from cancer and I was thinking about donating some money to the American Cancer Society in his name. I am currently a student in college, so how much would an appropriate amount be?

$10-20 if he's just an acquaintance/not a close friend.
$30-50+ if he's a really close friend i say.

Whatever you can afford is fine, every little bit helps. When it's for something like that I just give the amount I would have spent if I'd sent flowers to the service.

I want to say I remember they sent me a letter and told me when people made donations when my mom died.

Whatever you can afford to the point where you are actually making a sacrifice from your usual routine but not so much that you starve (if your weekly bar alcohol total is $50, then donate $50)
