Applyng for part time work when it's not advertised?

I'm interested in getting into the jewelry industry as a career, but before I jump right into a long and expensive gemology program, I'd like to get some experience at a small retail shop just to see if it can still hold my interest.

I'm just curious to know if I should just go down to places and speak to the owners/managers in person without having a resume/coverletter, or if I should go down with something formal to give them.

I've never done something like this, so I don't really know how to present myself.

If its a family run business, walk in and talk to them...

if it's a chain, apply with resume & cover letter.
