I just started my full time position making 26K for an Audio Visual Techician. Basically I set up TV's, DVD players, Projectors, etc. Nothing very technical.

There is a posting for a Systems Administrator position that was posted for 43K, and I think I would have a good chance at getting the position, but I wonder how it would look to the person in charge of hiring, seeing that I was just hired and already trying to move up.

What are your thoughts? This new position would be much better suited to me and I think I would enjoy it and be much more challenged.

Good luck!

Well, considering that the job is still in the IST department, if I didn't get the job and the word trickled down to my current boss (total b!tch, I hate her), she'd probably try to fire me.

All the more reason to apply then. Beware though, she may be reading this thread! :Q
If they fire you for applying for another job, you'll qualify for unemployment and food stamps until you get a new job. Just don't ever quit a job until you have another one.

It's gonna be bad if he wants to phone my boss and ask for a reference :Q

Give references from outside your current place of employment, and tell the Uni *not* to contact your current employer. If they ask why, explain the situation (a little more tactfully than you did here, of course :p )

Apply. Those jobs don't come along every day in Universities. I know cause I'm a Sys Admin for one.

On top of that, the jobs don't pay all that much. $43k is a good starting salary for one considering the awesome benefits you'll get. Probably better than what you have now by far just because of the different classification.

do it. 43k vs 26k? if ur boss had a chance for a job with a 60% raise... i dont think she would hesitate.
