applying for credit card

So, my application for an AmEx Blue Student card was declined. Can I use my parents' income as my household income? My yearly income means summer job for me, which is obviously way less than it would be if I could claim my parents' as part of my household. I'm still a dependent, though I live away from home in a dorm 9 months out of the year (and home for the summers).

apply for citi as long as you are >18 and go to some college .

already did, and was approved. i'm looking to start building credit, and all the perks of amex seemed like a good thing to start getting acquainted with. of course, it's not necessary, but it'd be nice to have one in addition to my bank card and the citi visa.

uh... if he's a dependant on their taxes he can. I didn't though....

I get turned down by amex every time even though I have tens of thousands of dollars on credit lines for other credit cards and was just approved for a morgage at a great rate.

Amex can blow me imho.

you are wrong. they are asking for household income. if you live with someone that make 100k/yr, and you make nothing, you can still put 100k/yr as your household income.

I never quite understood this. They have no way to check your income. You can put whatever you want can't you? Isn't that just to see how your debt to income ratio is?

im a college senior now, but when i applied for my amex gold when i was 19, i used my parents income, was approved within 30 sec on the site.....they more or less pay the bills so it seems fair to use their income

and thus the personal ethical delimma. whether or not to lie to obtain the CC is ones personal decision to make.

When I was submitting a credit card app a few years ago, I was told to include the cost of my college as income. I never understood why I was told to do that, but i did and got the card. I worked for a credit card bank doing sales, so I guess it was standard practice.

What you need to do is see if you can get a credit card through a local bank. Go to a community bank or even a regional bank and see if you can open a student credit card account. You'll have to have a checking account to do so. See if you can start with a low limit, like $300. This is basically how I built my credit up initially.

The thing that really helps is utility bills. If you had to pay a monthly electric bill or mortgage, your credit would take off. I wouldn't waste your time with the Amex Blue Student card....get a visa to start with and eventually get a real Amex Blue. The student card had limitations on it, so I cancelled it and resigned for the real blue.

That's strange. I got 2 Amex cards recently and my credit isn't that great.

Don't know how it is now, but back in 98 when I was graduating from college I was searching around for a credit card with a low interest rate.

When filling out their online form I was declined due to not making at least $30,000 a year (was currently working part time for about $18,000 a year). Clicked on the back button of the form and changed it from 18,000 to 30,000 and got approved....go figure.

Long story short....I do not think they verify income on credit card application forms.
