Applying for a job

I'm applying for a job in a different state and on the website it is asking for my minimum salary requirements. Cost of living is higher here in NoVa but I don't want to low-ball myself. Would it be kosher for me to just put in the box that I would prefer discussing salary requirements with a hiring manager or something of the sort?

Just write down the number that you feel is right. No sense in being wishy washy about it - if they can't provide you the salary that you need to live on, it's not worth taking anyway. Being indecisive about these things will only hurt you and if you don't get it, so what, there are tons of jobs out there.

Saying "fair market value" will almost assure you'll be lowballed.

Seriously, find out what you think the salary is worth by looking for similar jobs on monster or careerbuilder, etc then you can say I've seen this type of job in this area is worth X pay

I take what I am making at my current or last job and add 10-20%, then round up to the nearest 1k.

Yes, if you have the skills they want, they'll pay you what you ask.

It is hard for me to judge my salary based off others in the area due to the jobs I'm applying for require a security clearance.

This is the best approach...gives them the impression you have an idea what you are worth, but forces them to make the offer rather than you tossing out a number that is lower than what they were expecting...they don't need your charity! 😀

I gave up n the whole 'negotiable' 'commensurate with my experience' 'fair market value' crap and jsut started giving a number after recieving a few lowball offers. I told people striaght up what i wanted and what it would take to get me from the get go. Soon as i did that i have started getting offers more in line with what i was expecting and it has weeded out those companies that are just wanting to find someone cheap as possible. So I dunno if im just that valuable or if that whole dance around the salary is crap but frankly I dont think its worth the trouble to have to go through.

in my experience they don't even care what you want. Unless they hand picked you they will almost always offer you their minimum for the position. I think they just like to see what people will be willing to ask for.

I ended up asking for a pretty fair number but I'm willing to go a little lower considering the cost of living in the area.
