i have been hearing from people that i should call the company and let them know im interested... but i dont know, i'm a job hunting n00b... any advice would be appreciated.

Always call the company. It speeds up the process and ensures you are not over looked. That's how I became a proud employee of McDonald's.

YES!!!

First thing, go to Barnes and Nobles and just skim thorough (don't buy) a book called "What Color is Your Parachute". He gives really good advice in there. But that is mostly for full time job seekers. Although, I am sure most of it applies to part time jobs too.

If they say, 'don't call', don't call. That marks you immediately as either unable to follow directions or as insubordinate. Other than that, yes, do call, but not so often that you make yourself a pest. Always be uber polite, just inquiring, checking in, wanting to make sure they got your resume, etc. Act like you're just covering the bases.

As an IT manager, I received a call from someone who was interested and desparate in a job. I told him to go through the normal route and submit resume/talk to HR. The guy said he tried that route and didn't even get an interview. Times are tough and the job market is highly competitive. If I lost my job today, I don't know if I can handle the mortgage, etc. I empathize with the new graduates and people who are trying hard to get a career these days, not just a job.

Hang in there!

I used to call... all of them say the same thing, "Email me your resume and I will take a look at it and get back to you."
Its a polite way of saying "screw you".

I go to Monster.com job boards sometimes, and this hiring manager was saying that he really likes it when people call. He said that, it makes his job easier. Going through 100 resumes is a total waste of time.
