Was planning to work in the in-store computer repair/technician field. While filling out the application, they want to know if I have had any formal "computer training" and the like. They also want to know if I have any certifications, such as the A+ certification.

I don't have any of the certifications, or "formal training" but I'm sure I'm more competent than any of the repair guys in there.

What should I do? Get certified? Just put "no formal training" etc, on the application?

Thanks

Best Buy is the Walmart of electronics stores.... you don't need formal training.

RUN LIKE HELL IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF THE STORE!!!!!!! You'll thank me later. I have warned so many stubborn friends who have still applied after ignoring my words to regret it later on.

How soon after turning in the application will I know if I got the job?

3 days, 2 hours, 12 minutes, and 14 seconds. Unless it's the 3rd month of the 12th year following the 5th rise of christ, in which case it's 24 hours.

Work at a warehouse instead. It pays better, and you get a workout, assuming you don't pass out from the heat. ;)
The work is really really simplistic.
Pick up thing that computer tells you to pick up, from the location the computer told you to pick it up from.
Take pallet of items to door indicated on label that the computer made for you.

You're basically the arms and legs of a computer.

If you still want retail, try somewhere stocking shelves overnight, like Walmart, or hell, Best Buy. If it's a 24hr place, you won't have many customers to deal with, and of course if they're closed at night, no customers. They sure as hell don't work you nearly as hard as at a warehouse, and the place will be air conditioned.

How old do you have to be to work at Best Buy? I'd like to be considered the prodigy at my local Geek Squad for cash.

...or maybe promoted to the Nerd Squad? Nah that's bad business.

You talking about a local warehouse? Or a Menards or Lowe's type thing?

Dude...just...don't. I used to work at Best Buy. One of the worst work experiences of my life. All retail sucks, but BB was especially bad - they are complete whores to the dollar, and either you will do the same or you will get no hours.

If you're hellbent on working there, don't worry about training. The Geek Squad guys in the store I worked in were completely incompetent AFTER receiving the pre-opening training (yes, I actually helped open this Best Buy).

Trust me - look for work elsewhere.

I'll add my two cents. Regardless of whether or not you decide to work at BB, why not just get the certifications? They look good on a resume and a quick look at Careerbuilder or Dice.com shows that lots of jobs want the CompTIA certs. In addition, when your resume is scanned by the computer, if it doesn't have the key words, the computer dumps it. You could rephrase it so that it still picks up the key words though.

I'd imagine working for the geek squad bit would turn you into one of the condescending computer users that everyone hates.

Customer: My stupid computer stopped working!
Geek Squad: Are you sure it's the computer thats stupid? *high pitched laugh*

QFT. I used to deal with some in management and all of the ideas thrown out there are just to run over and squeeze every little bit out of customers and employees. I think the way they treated employees was among the worst I've witnessed. I've seen some of the procedures/guides for dealing with employees and you're far better off working somewhere else. Two of my friends started working at major banks at a young age and slowly progressed. They are now millionaires so if you're looking at a place with growth opportunities try applying at a major bank. But find a major company or city/county/state/gov, start young, work hard, and move through the ranks. Very few things look as good as a long work history with one company

You guys are harsh. I worked at Best Buy for 2 years while in high school. Granted it was 7 years ago (god, I'm getting old), but it was actually a decent job. I liked the people I worked with and the discount was nice. Retail is good experience and you can learn a lot about dealing with people. In the future, when you go to job interviews, promotion talks, work related presentations, etc you will be selling yourself and your ideas, so learning how to sell is a useful skill. I have used things I learned working there (best buy) and it has helped me.

I know people here hate on Best Buy. Whores to the dollar, etc. Well the reality is, there are in business to make money. You can hate how they do it, but clearly they have been doing it well.
