Applying AS5 on an Opteron?

Hi! How does applying Arctic Silver 5 (or any thermal grease for that matter) to an AMD Opteron differ from an Athlon 64?

Is the "chip" in the middle of the IHS or spread all over it?

Anyone please help ~! Thank you!

Huh? An Opteron is packaged in exactly the same way as an A64 so yes, the CPU die is in the middle. Even so, having the TIM cover the whole surface of the IHS will make its thermal heat transfer capabilities better.

The chip in an opteron is in the middle but the die is twice as large, and takes up a big portion under the IHS.

You should use the same strategy though; put a rice grain sized amount in the middle of the core and let the heatsink spread it around, as per Arctic Silver's directions.

I like to spread a think layer over the whole contacting portion of the heatsink, though.

How is the die twice as large? The die is the same size as any regular San Diego A64 in the case of single cores and the same size as a Toledo in the case of dual-cores. In fact, I think AMD said (at some point) that they WOULD be Toledos and San Diegos but they may be calling them something else just for kicks.

Yes, you have to make an "O" shape with the AS5. And it has to be perfect, no squares, octagons or other related shapes. Also, make sure you are facing north when you do so. (Yes that was a joke) :D

Umm two 90NM cores stuffed on one die means larger DIe?

I use 5 dots of AS5. 4 corners and the midddle. The enitre IHS needs to be covered in order to get good heat dissipation.
