Hi, I'm looking for an application that will allow me to change the RPM of my hard drive. I have a 7200 rpm hard drive but I would like to slow it down to 5400 rpm. Can you recommend a good app? Thanks

No such application exists. It would take extensive firmware changes for a hard drive to read and right at *any* other RPM than it is designed around. It's just not in the nature of the beast for hard drive RPM to be controllable.

No I've used these kind of apps before I just can't remember the name of the app I used.

Are you talking about an application that attempts to more aggressively shut off the hard drive when it's not being used? Because we still assure you there is no hard drive RPM reduction. It's simply not possible to do in an app. It would take extensive hard drive firmware reprogramming and evne then most hard drives simply aren't going to be able to do it. They are designed around running at that constant speed.

Your best bet is to sell off your existing drive and buy a 5400RPM drive. You should be able to at least break even since 7200RPM drives go for a premium. Heck if you have a 500GB notebook drive I might be willing to do an even trade as I'm looking for moving up to a 7200RPM drive :p

If having a slower drive is that important to you then buy a new drive. WD has there Green line of HDDs.

I'm actually doing this for research so I need to use the same drive.

Again I've used the app before I just can't remember than name. It is possible so please stop telling me that it is impossible. I know what I've done before.

Well, and I'm telling you this as nicely as possible, you're wrong.

Maybe OP is thinking of Automatic Acoustic Management of HDDs to make then run quieter?

I have seen some programs to slow down the processor for things like emulation to run programs slower. If you want to go slower buy a slower Hard Drive. Might also get a slower processor to begin with.
