FIXED

I had disabled the IDE Bus Master in the bios which caused the Event ID.
Glad it was user error instead of hardware.
Thanks again to everyone that suggested things.

I recently had a hard drive fail and upon receiving the RMA I keep getting these two events upon booting the computer:

Event ID: 26
Application popup: : Machine Check: Regs

0000: 00 00 08 00 03 00 6c 00 ......l.
0008: 00 00 00 00 1a 00 00 40 .......@

0028: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........

and

Event ID: 26
Application popup: : Machine Check:

0000: 00 00 38 00 03 00 9c 00 ..8...?.
0008: 00 00 00 00 1a 00 00 40 .......@

0050: fb bb fe fa 07 00 00 00 û»þú....
0058: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........

While using google I found many possible reasons for this. I also found a "fix" by changing the DWord value from a 1 to a 0 in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\EnableMCA. It removes the entry from the Event viewer but for all I know its just "hiding" the event.

The current hardware in this system is:

Enermax PSU 320W
Abit NF7-S V2
AMD 1700 XP
1GB PNY 2700 DDR
160GB Maxtor 8MB IDE
M-Audio Audiophile 2496
Sapphire 64MB ATI 7000 VE
Sony 52X CDRW CRX230E
NEC 16X DVDRW 3500A

I've tested all the parts and each appear to be working fine. I've tried swapping RAM, removing the drives, etc. I've also installed Windows 2000 and Linux and have no any errors or odd messages. The system seems to be stable and I have no errors with any of the three operating systems. I would just like to know the exact reason/cause for these two events if possible. Which it may be hard for you folks to troubleshoot without having the machine in your possession. I'm willing to test anything suggested except changing the operating system since XP is tied to this computer.

Machine checks are often bad hardware, not software (power supply, RAM, mobo, processor). Run memtest86+ and prime95 to see if they produce errors. Check voltages on the PS from the BIOS.

Is the hard drive the only thing you changed in the computer ?

If so, how did you get OS, etc. back on the new drive ?

If the hard drive is the only thing you changed, it would be a pretty good guess that there is something defective or uncompatible about your new hard drive.

Thanks.

I've used memtest and the typical methods of checking all the hardware. Everything appears fine and in working order. The computer seems perfectly stable. I will recheck everything a second time to make sure I did'nt miss anything the first time.

wpshooter, I reinstalled using the Windows disc. The hard drive is the only new hardware. Its the drive I received thru RMA'ing the drive that failed. I don't know if I can RMA this drive without an exact error code by using the Maxtor diagnosis disc.

I appreciate the replies. I'll post back once I go thru everything again.

My first suggestion would be to find another hard drive (preferably something other than a Maxtor - like a good Seagate) and try doing a quick reinstallation of the operating system on that drive & I would almost be willing to bet you that your problem will be gone. Then you can call Maxtor & tell them how it is that you believe their hard drive is BAD.

Good luck.
