Application error notes.rip

I have a user that is using Excel97, when he attempts to create a chart the following error occurs "Application error occurred : notes.rip" and in the same window header it reads "Quincy for Win32".
Any one experienced these errors. I have poured throught the website of M$ and also Lotus (since lotus notes is also installed on this system in question). It seems like there is a conflict between Excel and Notes .... that's my guess but couldn't get any further with that .....any help is appreciated.
