I need help from someone who has experience resolving compatibility issues involving WinXP Pro.
I am trying to install the official Microsoft tutorial: Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 Starts Here. MSVC6SH was included as a freebie on a CD-ROM. The installer crashes on all of my WinXP installations. (screenshot)
I tried it on a fresh install of WinXP SP1 using a VMware virtual machine; it installs and works perfectly! All of my Windows XP installations are "clean" with minimal bloat. The only possibility I can think of is that an official update from www.windowsupdate.com must have borked my system.
Using compatibility mode options, another problem appears. It still crashes during the file-copy process, but also has a strange problem on the license-agreement screen (line breaks do not work in the text area). (screenshot)
Can someone help me determine what crashes this installer? Is there a utility (or built-in service) which can log exactly what the installer is trying to do when it crashes?
