Anything you buy, within reason, to preserve your food will have to be reimbursed to you by your landlord. At least in CA. If you rented the apt. with the understanding you would have a working fridge and it gives out you have to preserve your food.

YMMV

My family have been landlords for 15 years and we haven't encountered that one.
Usually, we'll have the tenant just send us a bill for the cost of fixing the fridge, but we've never had them actually ask us to repay the cost of food/etc.
In most cases, claims like that are handled by renter's insurance.

Oh, and Rudeguy - Try unplugging the fridge for 15 minutes and plugging it back in. Sometimes they just need to be reset.

did that...actually I cut the breaker for a half hour....the harvest gold beast has finally died!

Getting back on topic for a second, I've had that problem with my father's fridge once when I was house-sitting. In his case, the cooling elements froze over entirely, causing it to completely go insane. Check and see if the elements are frozen over, and if so, thaw them out, and then turn the fridge back on.

2 ice chests plus ice? Nah, since that fridge is 17 years old, you could probably just pick up a decent 10 year old working fridge (used) for about $100. Make sure the landlady okays it (she may even have a spare fridge somewhere), and make sure she'll okay subtracting the amount you pay from your next month's rent.

Pinhole? WTF? You totally pissed away an opportunity handed to you on a silver platter!!!! I fart in your general direction. 🙁

so the handyman guy came buy first thing this morning...he told me he was going to fix it...I asked him nicely if there was any way I could just get a new one...he said it would be nearly impossible to get one since the boss is out of town.

I just got home from work, and I have a brand new fridge! He even moved all my stuff in there for me.

Next time I see that guy, I am gonna have to slip him a twenty
