Appliance Buying Advice

I'm just looking for any and all advice with regards to appliances.

I was out looking today and found a pretty good looking Samsung Front Load Washer/Dryer combo, but how good are Samsung appliances?

Are there any features I should look for? Any specific brands to avoid?

P.S. I'm in Canada if that makes a difference.

Samsung seems to be at the top of their game these last few years. All Samsung products I have purchased these last few years have been of excellent quality.

Do not buy LG!

I have a lovely LG dishaser that is the biggest joke. It's stainless but ... get this ... youHAVE to be at the unit at a certain time in the 2nd was cyle or else the detergent door will not open correctly. For a full 78 minute wash you have to stand there and actually open the door at 13 minutes in or the second cycle is pretty much just a rinse.

What a beautiful piece of crap.

I have a LG Washer/Dryer. Love them and no issues.

I have no experience with LG appliances, but that's obviously a defect. How long did you have the dishwasher before it started doing that?

If you're purchasing 5 appliances, you'll probably be able to get a much better deal at a mom&pop type of appliance store than at the big box stores. Also, better service. The box stores want to make $80 profit (or whatever it is) per item. The mom&pop place will be much more willing to bargain with you since you're purchasing that many appliances. They may also be able to give you an extended warranty as part of the agreement (cheaply), since they would likely be the ones providing the warranty service.

Recently built a house, got all new appliances. Here's my advice:

Do not get stainless steel. It sucks. It gets smeary, and magnets don't stick to it. There's a new finish called "Satin" that looks just like it, but it's 1/2 the price, easier to clean, and you can put your pizza delivery magnets all over the place.

Screw looks. Get the highest capacty washer and dryer you can get. You'll thank me when you're trying to wash things like blankets or comforters.

Ask about loudness in your dishwasher. Some of the cheapee ones sound like a jet engine when they're running. Also, if they have an arm underneath the top basket, make sure there's clearence for pans and large dishes underneath.

When choosing a stove, consider how easy it is to clean the cooktop.

I think I covered everything.

..I've been buying what ever sears has on sale. They deliver and set up and take the old unit away. never had a failure with any of their stuff.

Do you have a natural gas feed to the house? Producing heat directly with gas is cheaper than doing it with an electric heating element.
I don't know if gas appliances are much more expensive than electric ones though.
