Apple's SproutCore, thoughts?

"AppleInsider is running an article about Apple's new SproutCore Web application development framework, utilizing Javascript and some nifty HTML 5 to offer a 'Cocoa-inspired' way to create powerful Web applications. Apple built on the OSS SproutIt framework developed for an online e-mail manager called 'Mailroom.' Apple used this framework to build their new Web application suite (replacing .Mac) called MobileMe. Since SproutCore applications rely on JavaScript, it seems Apple had good reason to focus on Squirrelfish for faster JavaScript interpretation in Webkit. Apple hosted a session last Friday at WWDC introducing SproutCore to developers, but obviously NDAs prevent developers from revealing the details of that presentation. Apple has a chance here to keep the Web becoming even more proprietary as Silverlight and Flash battle it out to lock the Web application market into one proprietary format or another. Either way, this is a potential alternative, which should make the OSS crowd happy."

Didn't see any posts, but curious what you all think about this announcement, and the ramifications?

I'm waiting for the Slugpig update before using SproutCore on the Squirrelfish platform. That assumes that Legumesmog doesn't upgrade their Bananasplits first.

Okay in all seriousness it looks nifty. I don't see Silverlight taking off. Flash is great and has excellent video support. I think that JavaScript is a big pile of spaghetti right now - it's powerful, but it's super messy and not all code works on all browsers or rather all versions of browsers. That's what makes Flash nice - you can update Flash and it plays the same on IE5 as it does on FF3.

OT but I think M$ needs to stop trying to clone everyone else's products and focus on their OS. People are still beginning for XP on new machines and Microsoft is off in la-la land trying to make Silverlight and other crap. Stop the insanity! I work at Staples on the weekends and more than half of my customers buying new computers request Microsoft XP on it instead of Vista.

You had me going till the bananasplits 😉

Yea.. that seems to be my consensus as well. I think that Apple is going in the right direction moving their apps into RIA form, but this still needs more work to really compete with Flash.
