Was at my brother's for a BBQ last month. My son got scared of the rambutans when I tried to get him to eat one.

And how can you not have the "King of Fruits" on your fruits list?

http://www.articlesofhealthcare.com/1219/10-benefits-of-durian-fruit-for-body-health.html

It not only tastes good, but it's healthy for you. Just that minor smell thing...
Thats just a list of vitamins in the fruit and then the benefits of those vitamins. Those benefits do not extend to just eating the fruit. Many of those effects are dose dependent.

Is it ACTUALLY good for you? Obviously with the smell, it must have some unusual compounds in it other than vitamins that you can get out of every other fruit/vegetable.

Freakin' internet articles man.

29% DV riboflavin is not going to reverse your migraine, so dumb.

The article is either intentionally dumb or the whole website is written by a moron.

So you were an alcoholic then?

Actually it was a pretty good diet. The fruit goes through you really fast, so you have to eat at least three thousand calories a day, so you can really go to town all day long on food if you like to eat. I learned a lot about how digestion impacts mental & physical health too...you get really really really clear thinking on the fruitarian diet, plus a TON of energy (obviously, non-stop sugar). But it's all high-calorie, high-sugar, high-carb, high-fiber, low-fat, so it works out really well. I monitored my blood numbers & didn't have any blips in terms of blood sugar or anything.

There are some downsides. First, it's crazy expensive. It's not like you're eating dried fruit or canned stuff in syrup, it's all fresh & has to be eaten after it ripens but before it spoils, so scheduling can get to be a headache too. Plus you have to buy truckloads of it, and really you need to buy higher-calorie fruits that will fill you up, not like grapes where you have to eat 1.2 million of them to meet your daily caloric requirements haha. Second, it's nice to have hot food, and also meat. But you definitely appreciate regular food a lot more when it's a minority in your diet. Same approach as Soylent. Funnily enough, you don't really get sick of eating the same thing every day. It's all good, all the time. But you can't stack regular food on top, you have to have fruit first if you want to eat other stuff, otherwise you'll get crazy bad indigestion. On the plus side, you basically unlock the endless energy achievement, so that's cool.

Lately I've been living off donuts though :\

Love apple and other fruits but I developed allergy to many fruit(or pesticides) like apple, peaches, nectarine, pear, figs, cherry and plum. Pretty much all commercial fruit grow on tree in the colder climate.

Lucky I found an apple farm near by, I got no reaction eating their apples.

How "Queen of Fruits" does not end up on the list is another mystery.

Love mangosteen, but can't get it fresh in the USA other than in Hawaii. It's a crapshoot buying the imported stuff as it's often mush inside. And it's usually very expensive for that risk.

FYI...jackfruit = durian, so it is on the list ;)

As mentioned, jackfruit is not durian. Superficially, they are similar. But if you cut a durian open, it has "pockets" that hold the edible flesh. On the other hand, nearly the complete inside outside of the rind in a jackfruit is edible flesh.

If you're still not sure on the difference, just smell them both, you'll know after that. :)

Not sure what you mean by being unable to find fresh mangosteen in the US. They do get irradiated for safety, but other than that they are imported and "fresh." I see them for about $6-8 per lb in the northeast, but they should be available in most Asian grocery stores.

Yes, referring to irradiated (or worse, the hot bath a lot of fruit goes through). The treatment coupled with being picked immature for shipment kills a lot of the flavor.

Mangosteen can be had for about $10/lb here and it's usually terrible quality. Not worth the price.

I've been looking for a little variety in my fruit consumption.

Peaches are my favorite, far above anything else. The short two months or so that peaches are available make that period my favorite time of year. But forget about them, except out of a can, in January.

Going crazy lately on all of the different oranges and tangerines available (and loving it), especially Cara Cara navels (sweet, complex flavors), Minneola tangelos, Clementines (love the small Cuties) and others.

Bananas. Ubiquitous, but a year-round staple.

Apples. The good ones are fantastic, the lesser ones best left on the shelf. I especially like McIntoshes, with their beautiful texture and just the right amount of tartness. They seem to be getting harder and harder to find in stores, though. They're a more easily bruised apple, so don't travel as well as others, making their available season fairly short. Honeycrisps and SweeTangos are my other favorites, with the occasional Granny Smith and Golden Delicious thrown in. Again, a staple and enjoyed pretty much every day.

Grapes are getting expensive now.

Berries must be peaking, because I've see some good prices on them lately. Good for variety, I guess.

But now to where I'm completely out of my comfort zone: PEARS.

I'm only really familiar with Bartletts, but I find that I seldom find good ones and if I buy them unripe, by the time they ripen they're often mealy. What other pears should I consider? And how do you pick them in the store and ripen them best after you get them home?

I use the Alton Brown avocado trick for pears too - I store them in fast food drink quad containers:

My avocados typically start turning black 2 days after purchase; I've had them last up to 2 weeks separated in the cardboard containers you get from McDonalds or wherever. By not stacking them on top of each other in a bowl, they don't get all bruised & the ripening gasses is spread out just enough that they seem to do better at staying good longer.

Similar thing with strawberries...I found that putting them in a sealed jar with a lid, like a mason jar, kept them better for way longer. I sucked out the air with my foodsaver jar vac on one & it lasted a bit longer, and also tried a hand-tightened one in the fridge, but simply being in a limited-air environment seemed to help the berries stay fresh for like double the time.

Our grapefruits are pretty darn good this year. :)

I've never been able to get into grapefruits...no the fruit, not the juice, not even with sugar on it. Bleargh! But, I said the same thing about stuff like tuna & pickles, and around the time I turned 20, my tastebuds changed and all of a sudden stuff like supreme pizza tasted good. Maybe I just have to hit a certain age for grapefruits to work on my tongue :D
