[AppleInsider] Apple may abandon Intel for its Macs starting with post-Broadwell

Just saying, but the 2015 Macbook(s) don't support Windows 7 in Boot Camp (Apple's dual boot support), making it basically useless. Sure, you could use virtual machine software but it's another sign that Apple doesn't really value x86 compatibility at all anymore.

In my opinion, it is time that someone designs a desktop class ARM CPU. ARM itself is not particularly interested however Apple might take the opportunity.

I don't know if it makes it useless, as Windows 8+ is still supported, as well as Mac OS X but I would agree that it's utility on the OS side is diminished. I think the hardware side is even more of a disappointment, it targets to narrow a user and forces people to have a hub for video/usb/... I don't understand why the couldn't have at least put another USB Type-C on the other side (which would still require an adapter) to provide for connectivity. They're pushing iCloud hard on this kind of device, and while I can see why they might try to do that, it would be best to save that for the iPhone and iPad.

When you say desktop class, are you referring to the marketing term that Apple used with its iPhone 6|A7 presentation?, or are you referring to an actual desktop chip (50-90W TDP)? The answer really depends on that difference.

If you're referring to the verbiage of the first question, then lets see what the A9/X will bring in terms of performance (focusing on single-core). That will help provide an idea of what in the near-term is possible in potentially having enough performance to go into MacBooks. Other than that I don't see that happening from another vendor.

If you're referring to the second question, then no, only AMD will still put out products of that TDP and that will continue to be x86-64, maybe a try at ARM but I'd lean towards no on that.

Hardly anyone uses bootcamp. The ones using Windows simply reinstall the laptop.

x86 compability is as important than ever. Dualbooting, not so much.

I'm assuming you can't just install Windows directly. You have to use Boot Camp even if you end up wiping the OSX partition. Plus it means there won't be any drivers for it.

You dont need bootcamp. You can install Windows directly. You can easily dualboot as well without.

Bootcamp is nothing but drivers+wizard really.

The iPad Pro might be a different upgrade compared to previous expectations. It might be closer to a MacBook Air than the iPad Air 2. Based on rumors, the Apple iPad Pro is expected to be around 12.2 inches. It is also expected to come with more built in storage and a 4k display. There is also speculation that the iPad Pro could have a different architecture and software base, marking a shift from ARM-based processors to the Intel Core i-series

It appears that the iPad Pro could run a specialized version of OS X rather than iOS. This would put it in competition with Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4, which is rumored to come out in July. However, The Air Herald is predicting that the Surface Pro 4 could actually arrive sooner. They believe this since Microsoft has been dropping the Surface Pro 3 line by $100 for all units. It will be interesting to see which device officially arrives first: Will it be the iPad Pro or the Surface Pro 4?

If that's the case using iPad as a name makes no sense at all and would just create needless confusion. They would need to call it something like MacPad or MacTouch for this to make any sense.

agreed its speculation. but to some extent so is the ipad pro. i dont know how 'pro' the device could get under ios. Here is to hoping intel is gaining some more traction at apple beyond lte in the next iphone.

But they support Windows 8 right?

Tired of the Windows 7 "Omg, I love you so much Windows 8 sucks blah blah blah."

It still supports Windows 8. Just because it doesn't support Windows 7 doesn't mean they don't value compatibility. It just means they move with the times actually unlike a lot of self proclaimed PC enthusiasts who refuse to do so.
