Applebred OC'ing + New Sys info...

Ive got an 1.6 Applebred Duron ($42), a Shuttle AN35N Ultra ($60), and a 400W Sparkle PS on the way from Newegg.com. I plan to use my trusty CircuitWriter to have some fun with this baby and unlock that precious L2 cache. Ive also picked up a ThermalTake TM2 TMD fan at Frys to accompany my frolicking in overclocking land.

So i have a few questions before this junk gets here... ive of course heard of the overclocking prowess of the 1.6 (otherwise, why would i pick it up?) and let it be known that this computer is a fun project for me (I already have a Barton based OC'ed monster to my side)... so my questions are this...

What type of limit can I realistically hit with just the TM2 fan and some PC2700 ram w/sinks?
Does the AN35N-U have any known problems with the components I listed? Any special settings i need to be aware of?

Any other advice you could give me? It will all be very well used. Anyway, thanks for the help!

why ram sinks? ram, esp 2700 doesn't need it. its not like theyput out 100watts.

aq decent stepping 1800+ tbred would be easier, and probably cheaper in a frys combo

What stepping? I got a MIRGA and its a POS that only overclocks to 1800 Mhz. I got the same board as you do also. I returned the proc.

EDIT: BT, I bought the proc from newegg with the Shuttle mobo and Buffalo PC3200. I think I am better off waiting for Thorton because it's just a Barton with half the cache. And we all know how well Barton's OC.

Also, I have seen no issues overclocking with the Shuttle board. Very good, cheap, solid board. I love it.

Yea, there seems to be 2 very different core revisions floating around. One is hitting 2.0-2.3 with out a problem, while the other is struggling for every mhz. Heres hoping i get the first one. Heres also hoping that the darn truck can leave LA... as it looks like only 1 northbound freeway out of LA is open now...

The Applebred and AN35N U came a day earlier than i expected and in great shape. as per normal Newegg/FedEx operation.

The installation did require a reinstall of XP, as try as I may, the SiS AGP driver would not leave my system, and in turn resulted in a reboot everytime windows would attempt to load it. No matter, as its no big deal to reinstall Windows, and its never a good idea to not at least reinstall windows when plopping new boards in, ive found.

Anyway, enough of the boring stuff. The Applebred core wasnt recognized by the Shuttle's BIOS, instead calling it a "Unknown CPU 1900+". The bios was from May, so thats not entirely suprising. Im sure a flash will handle it, and it wasnt a critical problem as it ran completly fine.

The 1.6 Applebred, with the TM2 TMD fan and a mediocre covering of mediocre thermal paste, still managed to hit 1.87 (14 x 133) completly solid with stock voltages all around, and the fan set to its medium speed setting. Note that the case was CLOSED and that there are NO case fans present. The chip reported a temp in the high 30's degrees cels. Shifting to my goal of 15 x 133 would lead to boot looping when entering XP. Later today, i will be reinstalling the case fans and applying a different, more effective thermal paste. I will update this thread with the info when its done, as well as the rather suprising speed differences i found between the K7S5A and AN35NU with a 1.0 duron + 512 PC1800, from the old system... the K7S5A actually posted HIGHER scores... interesting.
