im not sure how you extend your waranty but with dell they sent me an email and a letter in the mail. From what i read with macbooks you're allowed to change the hardrive and ram and with macbook pros you're only allowed to change the ram, so you should be fine.

I would also recommend that extend your apple care, it should cost around 250 or less if you're a student or if you can get a student to buy it for you lol

One repair and the apple care pretty much paid for it self, my macbook had a messed up trackpad button when i bought it (was a refurb) apple fixed it right away and according to the receipt it cost them 270 bucks.

Laptops break and fail easier than desktops, why take a change and get stuck paying alot of money or possibly having to buy a new laptop or possibly having to live with a laptop thats missing a keyboard key or something.

heh..it'll be almost a year since I bought my macbook pro and Apple sent me a letter regarding warranty extension. $378 bucks to extend it 2 more years. I purchased it anyways since I don't know what could happen to my macbook and 2 years is pretty much the amount of time I'll use this before getting a new laptop (then passing this on to my sis or something).

I upgraded my ram as well but I still have the original 1gb stick kept away if anything happens.

My warranty ends in mid Feb.

So what is the process, what do I need to prove that? All I have is a scanned copy of the receipt.

I bought this laptop new un-opened from someone that won it at their local church.

Thanks

Try going to apple.com and registering your mac. I never bought an applecare, but I would imagine you have to input your mac's serial number when you activate it.

you can safely buy Applecare on eBay.
or LA Computer Co. has it for $235.

(I have no affiliation)

you must activate it within 364 days of the purchase date. after a year, no dice.
installing a hard drive or RAM does not void the warranty, unless something else is damaged in the process.

AppleCare is excellent. I purchased one of the original iMacs ("big chin" versions) as soon as they came out. Had no problems up to about a year ago when the computer fan just started making a loud noise and would just turn off. I could only keep it on a few minutes. Apparently was a problem with some of the original ones...anyway took it to a apple store and they fixed it up in a few minutes, no hassle, no bullshit. They are good guys over there, I remember asking the tech - "i'm not going to lose my music am I??" his response, "Sir, we would do everything we could to never let that happen." :D

I bought a MB a little over a year ago and I LOVE it, but when the time came to decide on AppleCare I decided against it - it's a lot of money and part of me would be happy to just buy a new machine when mine conks out (though admittedly that was partly based on the fact that the conjecture on the MB Air made it sound like the coolest machine ever made - now that it's out I think I would just get another MB instead).

Working at an Apple Store for a couple of summers taught me two things: The public is worthy only of our contempt and hatred, and AppleCare is worth every penny. You never know- and on the offchance that you need it, it rocks hardcore.

one cool thing about AppleCare that I've personally seen:

let's say your macbook's hard drive dies 2.5 years into your coverage.
at that time, there are no 60 or 80 GB hard drives being made any more. you'll get a larger hard drive for no extra charge.

it's better for portables, since they are often more to repair than desktops.
however, you don't want to pay for a logic board repair out of pocket... it's never cheap.

$199 on Amazon is a steal. And I think I missed the fact it's a Macbook, not a MBP.
