Apple warranty suckage

So my 3rd gen Ipod nano 3g decides to go and get splotchy bright marks on the screen (best way to describe it), and I follow Apple's procedure online to get it sent in since it's still covered under their warranty. However, they want me to pay over $30 in shipping and handling charges to send it in, and I live a couple hours away from an Apple store. How lame is that?

Did you try going over the store with it? I've never dealt with Apple warranty but that's the 1st thing I would try.

I don't think you can go to the store with it. I think you have to ship it back to the manufacturer or some other such nonsense.

I am having issues and ran into the same wall... further complicating matters is the fact that I have to make an appointment to go to the store and cannot simply show up for service like I did the other day🙁

My guess is if you go to the store, there won't be any charge to ship it. However, the last time I had an iPod repaired was a long while ago.

WOW! same problem you know figure I'd have to just ship it to them or get an RMA box from them like every other place.

but nooooooo apple is world class quality....f apple. great thing this nano was a gift. $30 bucks! no thanks

i remember having to pay a similar amount for my 5G 30GB ipod...i do remember that the ipod that was sent back to me was completely brand new.

Uh, I'm pretty sure you can take it to the Apple store and they'll replace it for you. I know people who took their iPhone to the Apple store and gotten it replaced.

Yah, I found that out the hard way as well the first time I tried to get service in store... In the end, it saves you time as the Apple stores stay quite busy all day long, but doesn't make it suck any less if you either forgot, or just didn't know.

This.

Take the iPod to an Apple Store, sign in at the "Genius Bar," and you'll have a new iPod in an hour. As a matter of fact, if you go to the store's page on Apple's website (not store.apple.com, but the specific page for that retail store) you can sign in before you leave, chances are they'll call your name right when you get there.

Don't do the online RMA, they usually send it back the same way (they did with me, malfunctioning hold switch on a 4G U2 iPod), whereas if you showed them blotchy spots at the store they'd just grab a new one for you.

Wow, sucky situation OP. It might be cheaper to just drive to the store, but if "a couple" hours away is more like 3, that's hardly a great solution either. Luckily I live right next to an Apple store so I don't have to worry about this for the day my Macbook or touch inevitably dies.

And for all the witty geniuses out there saying "Oh but it's an Apple product! It's flawless!" you're just as slavishly following trends as the Apple fanboys you're supposedly mocking. Anyone who's had Apple products for awhile (me included) will admit in a heartbeat that their warranty process is painful and their quality control is just as shitty as anyone else's.
