I'm thinking "Not another apple vs pc thread?"

From the link I would say that I would love to have a G4 if Photoshop is the only thing I did on my computer. There are too many other issues with Macs.

All the pretty colors, curved edges and, most importantly, the awesome drugs don't fool me.

(Apple found a way to give website viewers hits of LSD through the internet to try to trick them into believing that Macs are better.)

(Are we going to talk about this again?)

Yeah but can you run OSX on a P4?
Most people who use macs use a lot of photoshop, so even though we don't care about photoshop, the market that apple targets does.
I'm pretty sick of the mac vs PC crap going on. I swing both ways and am perfectly happy.
Some things, macs are better at, PC's are generally more practical and cheaper.
Macs are pretty and their laptops fvcking rule.

I would have been the first to post, but since I am at work, this took me like 15 attempts .. my brain needs a defrag. Running around helping ppl with macs and pcs all day and teaching them how to print and crap leaves very little time to post on ATOT.

There are a few important issues with that webpage:
1) What were they doing on photoshop? I guarantee I can take the same file, but do slightly different filters and show the P4 in the lead. Unless they tell you what filters they were using, you have to assume they only included the ones where the G4 did better and excluded all the ones where the P4 did better.
2) The BASE price of the dual 1.25 GHz G4 is $2970 (without monitor, no speakers, only 90 day warranty, etc). The BASE price for a Dell single 2.53 GHz P4 is $938. The base features were about the same (512 MB RAM, GeForce 4 MX, etc.).
3) Why not compare a 2.8 GHz P4? Why not a dual 2.8 GHz Xeon?

Edit: here is more evidence of point #1. That apple link says only: "We compared the Power Mac G4 to a 2.53GHz Pentium 4-based PC, using nine commonly used actions and filters". There are lots more than just 9 filters and actions. TechTV did a similar comparison and says "In terms of win-loss, the Pentium 4 handily beats the G4 scoring five wins to one." So there it is easy to pick actions in Photoshop where the P4 does better. Another website with Photoshop benchmarks says "And, as expected, the Mac dual 1GHz G4 could not even come close to keeping up with these two PCs. Even though the P4 machine has only a single processor, it was easy for it to leave the dual-processor Mac far behind." So you have to be very specific in what filters you use - then you must specifically tell the readers which ones you use otherwise the benchmark is meaningless.

I'd have to disagree with that one point. Two of Apples largest market segments: education and home users rarely if ever use photoshop. My middle school and high school were full of Macs, none of which had ever used photoshop. I know tons of people who buy Macs for home or work and have no intention of ever using it either. Yes some professionals use photoshop extensively, and the Mac is a good option, but I truely think they are a minor fraction of Apple's sales.

Wow, a Photoshop benchmark. What about the other 99% of programs people use their computers for? I wonder how much more "balanced" the PC would be over the Mac, then? ;)

I'm sure that helps the cause.

Yes Dell has on/off sold P4 systems with SDRAM. Dell had them, then stopped selling them, and now they are back. However Apple specifically says Dimension 8200 which is RDRAM. Of course they don't say how much RDRAM...

They probably loaded the dell with like 64mb, and then the apple with 1gb.

"Look, we loaded this 512mb image on each machine - the apple was much easier to work with!"

Obviously, PCs are better values, but the competition gets a lot more interesting if/when Apple switches its architecture to x86 or preferably IBM Power4. Supposedly, Motorola isn't ramping the G4 much lately and x86 CPUs are blowing them away on both cost and performance. Unless Motorola does an about-face, it's a matter of time before Apple finds a more capable CPU supplier (obviously somewhat easier said than done).
