Apple using intel chips: Will PC software run on Apple?

With Apple switching to Intel chips, will running PC programs on an Apple be just a matter of a patch. A patch much like when a game comes out for the pc that has a linux patch included to run on linux.

I'm thinking that the hardware will be standard pc hardware and apple will just taylor their os to run on a pc. Then pc software should be easily made to run on the apple os?

Should be able to run WIN32 Apps using WINE, cannot see a reason, might take some work to get them to run though. However games that already work on linux should work with minimal porting since MAC OS is unix at its core and will be running X86.

"PC" software is actually more "Windows" software.

It's like Windows programs running on Linux, it's not that simple.
it's the exact same principle between Windows and OSX86 as it is between Windows and Linux.

it's possible, but no one ever said it would be quite easy, nonetheless it's not impossible.

i've seen windows 98 run on an Mac system and you didn't even need to restart the computer to initiate the 98 OS which was even more weird

Once Apple starts shipping rigs with Intel chips, all you'll have to do is set up some kind of Vista/OSX dual-boot and you have both worlds at your fingertips.

It was probably virtual pc. Its all emulation which is why no restart is needed. It isn't very fast but it gets the job if you need some random pc app.

Win32 applications are not going to run on Mac os x unless someone invests some time building something like wine. There have been rumors of apple porting over the Cocoa framework to windows which would allow people to more easily create applications for both.

Alot of people got excited because they thought this would mean more games for the mac. But alot of time spent on porting games to the mac is porting everything into opengl and openal.

Dual boot isn't anywhere near as elegant as running two OS environments (at fast speeds) at the same time.

Who says they can't use chips with Intel's virtualization tech?

Why would you want to run PC software on an Apple? Maybe?
So you can have one system and run both Mac and Linux\Windows software, why else?
