I wonder if a Magic Trackpad remote will come in to play, to let you play existing games from the iPod Touch on your TV.

My roommate just got an AppleTV, it already can't do 1080p. It will connect at that res, but I don't think any of the HD stuff in Apple's store is true 1080p (it might be that res, but I don't think it has the bitrate for it).

Weren't you still able to stream your own stuff if it was encoded in 1080p?

Certainly not MKVs with XBMC, and it struggles mightily on 720p MKVs as well. He did order a Broadcom HD decoder card, it replaces the wireless card, but he has high hopes.

There’s only one problem.

The Apple TV never had support for 1080i or 1080p video.

Check the specs on Apple’s own Web site to confirm. The Apple TV simply does not output 1080p or 1080i video. It never has.

Engadget's article makes it seem like the lack of 1080 playback is a regression from the existing shipping model. It’s not. It’s a regression from a previous rumor regarding the next-gen model.

Looks like someone else reads DaringFireball.

While AppleTV will not play a 1080P source, it will up res a 720P or less signal to 1080i or 1080P. You can select the setting in the AppleTV's video set up menu.

From Apple's Apple TV setup PDF http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/AppleTV_SetupGuide.pdf

i was plugging in my iphone4 to the vga output last night but wasn't getting anywhere. might be because i was facetiming at the same time. iirc the ipad cable worked fine on the same apps but wasn't multitasking (duh).

I've been holding off on buying one because it doesn't do 1080i or p. I guess this will just be the thing that finally pushes me to building my own devices.

It also has a lot of trouble with some 720p MP4s, which it should be able to play natively. The Broadcom CrystalHD card should alleviate this problem, but that's a hack. At that point it ceases to be a stock AppleTV.
