I checked out the Apple TV at apple site but it seems it is for viewing media from iTunes store, Netflix, and sports games and such that's about it. You can't use this to pickup cable signal? Say you have a cable with TV program subscription like AT&T. This thing doesn't have coax input. Anyone knows? My parents are wanting to get one but need some clarification.

thanks a ton,

The Apple TV connects to your home internet the same way your computer/laptop does (ethernet or WiFi) and it outputs some kinds of media (Netflix, iTunes, etc.) to a television or other device with an HDMI input.

Just like your laptop, if you only used iTunes, Netflix, and YouTube.

At this time the Apple TV is not a cable box and it's not a web browser (and an Apple Remote is a terrible input device for the web). It is, however, good at viewing or listening to various forms of content via iTunes, connected computers (and their iTunes libraries), Netflix, Hulu, and so forth. It's also an Airplay destination for your Mac.

if you have an Apple machine, you can airplay to the TV and turn the TV into a giant monitor. That's the only way you'll see the internet on an Apple TV for now.

Yes, the remote is moderately annoying. Thankfully you can pair it to a Bluetooth keyboard, or a universal remote.

You can also use an iDevice as a remote, which then gives you a keyboard.

Browsing the Internet is awesome if you have a device with a 4" display and use AirPlay mirroring. That means any one of these:
  • iPod touch 5th gen
  • iPhone 5
  • iPhone 5s

Make sure to disable overscan in your TV's settings and disable overscan compensation in your Apple TV settings. This will maximize the usable area and detail visible on the screen.
