Apple says small number of Apple TVs have WiFi issues, opens replacement program

Apple has informed its official retail stores, AppleCare employees, and authorized resellers that a small number of third-generation Apple TV units have WiFi issues. These issues surround not being able to locate a WiFi network, unable to join a network, and dropped or intermittent connections.

"Apple has determined that a very small number of Apple TV (3rd generation) products might experience one of these Wi-Fi related connectivity issues: Cannot locate network, Unable to join network, Dropped or intermittent connection."

If an Apple technician determines that an applicable Apple TV has these issues, the unit can be replaced as part of a replacement program that Apple has begun because of these WiFi issues. Apple says that replacements can be offered free of charge up to two years after the device’s purchase date.

Here are the serial number pairs that are eligible:

Earlier this year, Apple silently began shipping a tweaked version of its third-generation Apple TV. This new model, as revealed in FCC filings, features new Broadcom wireless chips. It is plausible, we speculate, that the change in WiFi parts could have been in response to these WiFi issues in some third-generation models.

I've been seeing some conflicting reports on this. People on a few different websites say that it's not the 3rd and 4th alphanumeric characters, but the 4th and 5th. If it's the former I'm not eligible, but if it's the latter I am.

I just tried connecting Via Airplay w/ my rMBP and playing a video. Every time I select Apple TV as the audio out, the Airplay connection cuts out. Anyone else having issues with their 3rd gen Apple TV's?

I have not heard anything personally or experienced anything unusual with my Apple TV but then again mine is hardly used. If I come across any additional details, I will be sure to let you know.

Well that makes it easy to resolve... LOL

Since mine is working like a champ, I'm not going to even check.

But thank you sir for the heads up, much appreciated! Things like this are always good to post.
