I don't think anyone aside from mac fan boys believed those ads anyway.

I'm going to start an advertising campaign proclaiming that I have the biggest **** in the world.

Yeah, the UK banned those ads ages ago. The BBB recommendation in the US seems a little late now, considering that I don't see those ads on TV anymore.

However, I still wonder why I can't fly after installing Windows XP. ;)

Now where are those dual G5 2.5 machines? I think a dual G5 2.5 would be roughly comparable or slightly faster on average compared to a dual Xeon 3.2 (with the 1 MB L2 cache).

hehe, there's just a chance that we're all biased against apple being PC fanboys n all...

i would have challenged the G5 claims when i had a opportunity, especially against them apple fanboys :D

It was a very bold statement in any case. Even to someone not familiar with hardware would hold that statement to the highest of most skepticism.

why am i not surprised by the reaction of the general atot poster that macs suck? because they're all x86 fan-boys, that's why. you don't hear about people protesting the fact that windows xp doesn't make you fly or that intel's pentium 3 processor makes the internet faster. but whenever apple makes a claim, people tend to get into a feeding frenzy.

Not all are, Eug who posted above is a pretty big Mac fan. Wild images which any idiot will know are false are fully legal, allowed, and encouraged in advertising (an operating system letting you fly for example - heck even Red Bull is using that type of image now with little people flying after drinking their product). And the P3 made running things on websites faster (flash games, etc.) However you are right it doesn't affect download speeds, but Intel never made that claim.

Back to the subject. This is a long time coming. Apple has been making that claim for years without any good benchmarks. They will at most release one number from a benchmark and won't tell anyone what the configuration or exact test was. It is nice to see that the government is stepping in and saying that Apple needs more proof for those claims (since they could easilly fool people - unlike flying Windows XP).

Every product has its advantages and disadvantages. At the time when it was released, the dual g5's were the fastest 64bit cpu's on the market for the desktop (I'm not talking about Sun/SGI/etc). That was the basis for their claim. In almost every task, including photoshop, a PC (64bit cpu ones) can perform better, but the mac's have created a niche market when it comes to graphics. A friend of mine who is in graphics design (still in school) told me that majority of the industry that he is headed toward uses mac's and are loyal to em. The reason is because overall the mac's have performed better than the PC in the tasks they need them for.

and why did it take a 'tip from dell' for this to happen? apple may not have the fastest computers, but the current #3 is a cluster of apple g5. perhaps dell is jealous that they're only #4, or perhaps they're unhappy that their supercomputer in buffalo, new york keeps crashing. besides, the bbb is not a government agency (at least not in the u.s.). here's an odd quote:

In a statement Thursday, NAD also said it took issue with Apple's claim regarding the computer's 64-bit processor. The "advertiser's claim, 'the world's first 64-bit processor for personal computers,' could reasonably be interpreted to apply to workstations, in the context in which it was presented." This claim was unsupported by evidence, according to NAD. The organization said that although the advertisement had run its course, it recommended that Apple "modify this claim to effectively limit it to personal computers."

this surely doesn't make any sense. apple did make the claim for personal computers, and nad wants them to change the claim to limit it to personal computers?

Yeah, I'm glad that Apple was forced to pull those ads. I have some 64-bit servers at work that could destroy a dualie G5.

Power Macs aren't servers, hence the wording of the ad.

Actually, they're IBM pSeries servers. They have six IBM RISC processors, which are simular in design to the ones in the Power Mac. They also make some high-end quad processor workstations with those processors, which could probably smoke a Power Mac fairly easily. At $40,000 each, they damn well better be able to, anyway! :)

Of course, you could probably get simular results with a maxed out dual Itanium or Opteron workstation.

Well... Yeah, POWER4 is the parent to PPC 970, but of course POWER4 competes with Itanium 2, not Opteron/Xeon/G5.
